Akwa Ibom Governor Condemns Gender-Based Violence, As Police Apprehend Lawyer Husband

Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, as spoken against the recent assault on a woman in Uyo by her lawyer husband, Ekere Ebong. Following the circulation of a viral video depicting the incident, Mr. Ebong was promptly arrested by the Akwa Ibom police on Monday.

In an official statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Ekerete Udoh, Governor Eno expresses the collective disapproval of the government and people of Akwa Ibom towards this severe case of gender-based violence. The governor affirms the state’s commitment to assisting the victim and ensuring that justice is served in accordance with the relevant laws combating gender-based violence.

Governor Eno underscores the gravity of the situation, emphasizing that the assailant, who is expected to face charges soon, has engaged in behavior contrary to the cultural norms of Akwa Ibom. The governor reiterates the state’s zero-tolerance stance against gender-based violence.

The police in Uyo reveal that Mr. Ebong is a “known habitual perpetrator of violent acts against his wife” and assures that he will be arraigned once the investigation is completed. The disturbing video captures the assaulted woman in a distressed state, clad only in underwear with a visibly bloodied face. Her pleas for help are audible, and a voice from the background rebukes Mr. Ebong for his violent actions.

Despite the distressing scene, the neighbors, witnessing the incident, step in to shield the woman from further harm as she bravely walks away from her husband. The collective response from both the government and law enforcement underscores a commitment to address and eradicate such instances of gender-based violence within the state.
