IPOB Calls for Discontinuation of Nnamdi Kanu’s “Charade Trial”, Says It’s Unlawful

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has raised objections to what it perceives as the “political trial and charade display” of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, at the Abuja Federal High Court. In a statement, IPOB called upon the government and the Attorney General of the Federation to discontinue what they deem to be the illegal retrial of Kanu.

Emma Powerful, spokesperson for IPOB, emphasized the illegality of Kanu’s renewed trial and expressed the organization’s disinterest in further court proceedings, citing previous legal outcomes and questioning the government’s motives.

Highlighting the prolonged nature of Kanu’s legal battles, IPOB questioned the rationale behind compelling Kanu to seek bail from a lower court despite previous legal victories. The group pointed to the Nigerian government’s refusal to adhere to previous court judgments and raised concerns over the Supreme Court’s decision to return the case to the High Court, suggesting political maneuvering.

Emphasizing the peaceful and lawful nature of IPOB’s self-determination struggle, the statement denounced any potential imposition of “barbaric bail conditions” on Kanu and vowed to challenge them.

Moreover, IPOB accused the Nigerian government of violating both domestic and international laws in Kanu’s arrest and extradition from Kenya. Refusing to acquiesce to what they perceive as judicial illegitimacy, IPOB pledged to expose and challenge any attempts to undermine Kanu’s rights or the organization’s cause.

Finally, the statement urged the government and the Attorney General to cease what IPOB views as a “charade” of justice and emphasized the nullity of any bail conditions imposed on Kanu without regard for his fundamental human rights.
