Black Inventors: The Trailblazing Tech Career of Marian Rogers Croak

Marian Rogers Croak is a pioneering figure in the world of technology, renowned for her groundbreaking work in voice over internet protocol (VoIP) and communication technologies. With a career spanning over three decades, Croak has made significant contributions to the development of modern telecommunications systems. Her expertise lies in areas such as Voice over IP, text-to-speech, and video conferencing technologies, which have revolutionized how people communicate globally.

Croak’s journey in the tech industry began in the 1980s when she joined AT&T Bell Labs as a software engineer. It was during her time there that she played a pivotal role in the development of VoIP technology, which allows voice communication over the internet, marking a significant shift from traditional circuit-switched networks. Her innovative ideas and technical prowess led to numerous patents and advancements in telecommunications, laying the foundation for future communication technologies.

Marian Croak became one of the first two Black women to be inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame. Her innovations in internet technology have enabled remote work, text donations, and voting for American Idol. Croak is also an advocate for racial justice and gender representation in STEM.

Throughout her career, Croak has held various leadership positions in major technology companies, including AT&T, Lucent Technologies, and subsequently, Google. At Google, she served as a Vice President of Engineering, where she continued to spearhead initiatives aimed at improving communication technologies and expanding access to digital services. Croak’s leadership and vision have helped shape the landscape of modern communication, making it more accessible and inclusive for people around the world.

Beyond her technical achievements, Croak is also committed to promoting diversity and inclusion in the tech industry. She actively mentors young professionals and advocates for greater representation of women and minorities in STEM fields.
