Oyo Government Probes Suspected Monarch, Foreigners, others in Illegal Mining

In Oyo State, an investigation has been initiated regarding the involvement of at least one traditional ruler, two community heads (Baales), and two mining companies in illegal mining activities. While the identities of those under scrutiny have not been disclosed, it has been revealed that the suspended Onido of Ido, Oba Gbolagade Babalola, is among those being investigated.

The Director General of the Oyo State Mineral Development Agency (OYSMDA), Abiodun Oni, disclosed this following an on-the-spot assessment visit to an illegal mining site at Odo Ogun village in Ido Local Government, Ibadan. He emphasized that the outcome of the investigation will determine whether the government will pursue legal action or release the suspected individuals.

Oni also urged members of the community, including village heads, hunters, farmers, and residents, to report any suspicious mining activities to the government through the appropriate channels. This move underscores the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining and preserving the integrity of local communities and natural resources.
