“Davido Owes no Apology to Arab Religion Adherents” Wole Soyinka Backs Nigerian Star Over Artistic Video

Nigerian renowned playwright, Novelist, poet, and Nobel prize winner, Prof. Wole Soyinka has openly aired his opinion concerning the controversial music video posted by Nigerian music star Davido.

Prof. Soyinka who sided with Davido, disclosed that he ( Davido) owes no apology to the Arab religion adherents following their uproar, demanding an apology after Davido took down the video.

Prof. Soyinka made a reference to the act carried out by the former Governor of Kaduna state, Nasir El Rufai after he made derogatory comments against Christians in the past but was never asked to apologize.

The renowned writer said,

“There was nothing to apologize about, none should be offered, and that applied equally to El Rufai’s derogatory comments about Christians at the time. Let us stop battening down our heads in the much-contrived contrition. We know where contrition, apology, and restitution remain clamorous in the cause of closure and above all, Justice”.

Prof. Soyinka’s comment is also contrary to remarks made Ex Lawmaker by Shehu Sani, who had earlier said that Davido deserves to apologize to the Muslim community.

Recall that on Friday, July 2023, Davido posted a video snippet of his signee Logos Olori new single titled “Jaye Lo”, promoting his single.

The music video had a scene where people were praying and dancing in front of a mosque which according to the Arab religion adherents in Northern Nigeria, it is against their religion. Despite taking down the video, the Northern Community is still raged by the act which spurred public demonstrations in Maiduguri, where a group of adherents, issuing threats, burnt a banner of Davido.

This is not the first time these youths are showing such extremism as regards their religion, as was the case with Deborah Samuel, who was gruesomely murdered in Nigeria’s northwestern Sokoto state after she was accused of blasphemy.
