Chinese Invasion, Forest Plunder Creating Chaos in Cross River Community

Conflict has arisen between environmentalists and a lawyer in Cross River State of Nigeria, centered around the presence of illegal Chinese nationals in Effi, Okuni community. The Coalition Against Illegal Lodging and Mining Activities in Cross River State (CAILAMA-CRS) expressed concern over a petition filed by lawyer Ichire Imo Okim against Prince Odey Oyama, a member of the coalition.

Allegations include threats to Oyama’s life and the involvement of local operators in covering up the entry of uncertified Chinese nationals into the community.

The coalition, represented by Dr. Martins Egot and others, called for transparency and justice, urging all accusers of Oyama to come forward and meet at the proposed Police Headquarters in Abuja. Oyama, known for leading environmental campaigns against the incursion of Chinese nationals, has been scheduled for an interview at the Police headquarters. The coalition suspects the involvement of shadowy agents aiming to confuse the narrative and shield the unlawful entry of Chinese nationals into Okuni Community.

The dispute between lawyer Ichire Imo Okim and the environmentalists has escalated, with a case filed against Oyama and the State Police, demanding damages. Oyama, in return, accuses Okim and Effi traditional rulers of colluding to take over parts of Effi forest for illegal logging activities with uncertified Chinese nationals.

Demands include the production of comprehensive accounts of transactions and the identities of the undisclosed Chinese nationals introduced into Effi Community.
