Akwa Ibom: UK Delegation Eyes Investment Hub, Endorses Governor Eno

Akwa Ibom State – Uyo, a British High Commission delegation led by Deputy High Commissioner Johnny Baxter visited recently to signal the UK’s intent to deepen trade and investment ties with the state under Governor Umo Eno.

During the visit, Governor Eno showcased his administration’s ARISE Agenda and development projects, including the Liberty Oil & Gas Free Trade Zone, Ibom Industrial City, Itam Industrial Park, and a planned Aviation Ecosystem to support Ibom Air’s Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul (MRO) and terminal operations.

Baxter praised the state’s infrastructure, greenery, and agricultural potential, noting that in just 24 hours he observed well-maintained roads and a lush environment — signals of quality leadership. He singled out Ibom Air as an impressive state enterprise, citing its role in enhancing tourism and connectivity.

The British envoy affirmed the UK’s readiness to partner with Akwa Ibom across sectors including trade, infrastructure, tourism, and agriculture, offering support for duty-free trade arrangements.

In his remarks, Eno traced the long historical ties between Nigeria and the UK, noting partnership with the Tony Blair Institute on tourism development. He also highlighted earlier educational exchanges sponsored by the state and reiterated plans for new rural electrification, tree crop development, and expansion of the Ikot Ekpene International Market.

Following briefings, the UK delegation toured key sites including the ARISE Resort — a 70-hectare erosion ravine transformed into a tourism facility under Eno’s leadership.

This engagement fits into a broader UK strategy to engage subnational governments in Nigeria and expand commercial ties across the southern states.
