Counsel Ejimakor Decries Criminal-like Delay in Nnamdi Kanu’s Supreme Court Case Transmission

Aloy Ejimakor, the Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has expressed concern over the unusual and unacceptable delay in the handling of Kanu’s case by the Supreme Court. Ejimakor, in a press release issued on Monday, called upon the judicial and administrative leadership of the apex court to promptly transmit Kanu’s file to the Federal High Court and provide certified true copies of the judgment to his legal team.

During his routine visitation to Nnamdi Kanu at the Department of State Services (DSS) custody, Ejimakor highlighted the persisting failure of the Supreme Court to enroll its judgment from December 15, 2023, and transmit the case file to the Federal High Court, as per the court’s order. This delay is deemed unacceptable by Kanu, who has been in detention for two and a half years, with concerns about his deteriorating health.

Ejimakor emphasized the legal implications of the delay, stating that any prolongation in certifying the judgment and transmitting the case file would be legally injurious to Kanu, leaving him detained without immediate prospects of trial and exoneration.

He pointed out the contrasting efficiency in Election Petition cases, where judgments are expedited and certified within days, urging the Supreme Court to take prompt action to align with the justice demands of Kanu’s case.

The press release strongly urged the Supreme Court’s leadership to prioritize the transmission of Kanu’s file to the Federal High Court and ensure that certified true copies of the judgment are expeditiously provided to his legal representatives, emphasizing the critical nature of timely legal proceedings in this matter.
