The Oriendu autonomous community of Ohuhu Clan in Umuahia North LGA, Abia State, has implemented a prohibition on the use of arms and dangerous weapons during its upcoming 2024 Iri Egwu cultural festival at the Oriendu community market square.
In an official message endorsed by the traditional ruler, HRM Eze Philip Ajomiwe, and supported by the Council of Chiefs, the community emphasized its commitment to peace, stressing a zero-tolerance policy for any form of violence during the festival. The community assured all invited guests, including in-laws and friends, of a tranquil atmosphere, consistent with the community’s longstanding peaceful traditions.
The statement issued by the traditional ruler and the Council of Chiefs underscored the community’s stance against violence and the display of arms, emphasizing the need for adherence to these guidelines during the Iri Egwu festival. In response to this development, Mr. Towechi Izukwem, a youth from Ohuhu Clan, expressed support for the decision taken by the royal father and his cabinet. Acknowledging the potential risks associated with the display of arms, he commended the community leaders for their commitment to preventing any breakdown of law and order.
This initiative aligns with the broader directives from Governor Alex Otti, who has consistently urged monarchs and community leaders to safeguard their domains against criminal activities, emphasizing consequences for those who fail to uphold these responsibilities.
