Reports reveal that many Imo state residents across 27 councils in the state, adhered to Simon Ekpa’s sit-at-home order, defying Nnamdi Kanu’s end to the act.
In the state capital Owerri, many businesses, shops, banks, and food outlets were reportedly under lock and key, ignoring the state government’s directive to open their business or risk closure.
It was observed that major busy streets in Owerri such as Douglas, Nekede, and Okigwe, amongst others, were visibly deserted. This is happening contrary to Biafra leader, Nnamdi Kanu’s end of Monday’s sit-at-home in the eastern part of Nigeria.
Recall that on June 30, 2023, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, confirmed that the IPOB leader indeed declared an end to the controversial sit-at-home in the Southeast.
Mr. Ejimakor, on his verified Twitter handle on Friday, posted copies of Mr. Kanu’s handwritten letter to Mr. Ekpa, whom he also instructed to stop antagonizing governors and other political leaders in the region.
Mr. Ekpa, who is based in Finland, has been declaring sit-at-home in the eastern region, which he said was mainly to demand the release of the Nnamdi Kanu.
After Mr. Ejimakor made the letter from Mr. Kanu public, Mr. Ekpa described it as “fake,” claiming it was written by authorities of the State Security Service (SSS) and not the IPOB leader.
Meanwhile, Kanu’s lawyer has said that those enforcing the order in the region had “failed woefully”, adding that they would be soon prosecuted for their actions.
