The body of Mallam Hudu Hassan Barau, the ward head (Sarkin Shuwaka) of Shuwaka in Kyaram District, Garga community, Kanam LGA, Plateau State, has been recovered from a bush after he was kidnapped recently
According to the Kanam Development Association, chaired by Garba Aliyu and secretary Shehu Kanam, the monarch was abducted by suspected bandits and later killed. The recovery of his body sparked widespread grief and outrage, with community leaders decrying the “senseless killing” amid escalating insecurity in rural Plateau.
This killing is part of a broader pattern of attacks on traditional rulers in Plateau State. In a subsequent incident, gunmen abducted Alhaji Zubairu Usman Garba, the district head of Birbyang in Kantana area, barely a week after Barau’s death, raising fears that bandit operations are shifting zones.
Local voices point to repeated abductions and attacks in the Garga area in recent months—with limited visible security responses. The Kanam association has appealed to the federal government, Plateau State Government, and security agencies to act decisively to stem the rising tide of violence.
