In the past three years, the security picture in the Southeast has been very troubling. Criminals with questionable identities masquerading as ‘unknown gunmen’ have murdered hundreds of people, including personnel of the army, police civil defence and civilians alike
Dozens of these innocent victims were summarily executed on the street. Security posts, in addition to private property, have also been attacked and destroyed. In the wake of the upsurge in crisis, the five governors hurriedly met and announced the formation of ‘Ebubeagu’, a regional security outfit.
However, the formation of Ebube Agu did less or nothing to curb the wave of insecurity in the south East. Worried by this ugly situation, the houses of representative have decided to join hands with the leader of the Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB) to nip the crisis in the bud. The house set up a committee chaired by Mr. Obinna Aguocha
Mr Aguocha, says his committee has met with the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as part of an effort to keep peace in the South East geopolitical zone of the country.
Aguocha, whose adhoc committee interfaced with the relevant security agencies to reduce kidnappings, assassinations and banditry in and around Isuikwuato and Umuwneochi LGA’s of Abia State, said tremendous progress has been made to address the menace.
Aguocha iterated that due to the efforts of stakeholders, the situation is improving as commercial activities and famers are returning to their businesses
According to him, the efforts so far is clearly work in progress, adding that to achieve lasting peace, plans are at an advanced stage to engage the governors of the southeast, traditional, and faith-based leaders, as well as critical stakeholders representatives.
“As a part of the search for lasting solution, we have also engaged with Mazi Nnandi Kanu. I am happy to announce significant progress in this regard, particularly on the need to put a stop to the Monday sit-at-home that has crippled the economy of the southeast,” he said.
“We have interfaced with relevant security agencies and Service Chiefs on the imperative to reduce kidnappings, assassinations, and banditry in the southeast.”
He expressed appreciation to the FG, the Speaker of the House, Dr Tajudeen Abass and Governor Alex Otti of Abia state for their support and encouragement in the pursuit of peace in the Southeast geopolitical zone of the country.
