NFF Secures Agreement with European Clubs for Early Release of Players ahead of 2023 AFCON

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has successfully negotiated with European clubs regarding the timely release of Super Eagles players for the final camping in Abu Dhabi ahead of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON). This agreement addresses concerns about clubs reluctant to release players during their league seasons, especially outside FIFA’s designated open window.

Ademola Olajire, the Media Director of NFF assured that the players would be released on time for the camp, set to commence on January 2. While awaiting Coach Jose Peseiro’s final player list for the competition, Olajire emphasized that players would start their release from January 1.

Over the weekend, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) disclosed that all 24 nations participating in the 2023 AFCON had submitted their provisional squads by the stipulated deadline of December 14, 2023. The tournament’s regulations allow member associations to submit a provisional list of up to 55 players.

CAF announced an expansion of the final squads to 27 players, up from 23 in previous events, with the registration of four additional players being optional rather than obligatory. The deadline for the submission of the final squads is January 3, 2023, precisely 10 days before the opening match of the tournament.
