LGA Chairmen more Powerful than Monarchs, Ooni of Ife Laments, Calls for Constitutional Review

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, emphasized the diminishing authority of traditional rulers in Nigeria, advocating for a constitutional revision to restore their rights. He expressed concern that local government chairmen wield greater authority than monarchs, deeming it detrimental to the nation.

Speaking during the eighth anniversary of the Nigeria Most Influential Awards in Abuja, represented by Oba Adedire Adewole Solomon, the Onifegunwa of Ifegunwa in Ile-Ife, the Ooni called for a comprehensive review of the constitution. He highlighted the existing provision that allows local government chairmen to overrule traditional monarchs, emphasizing the need for rectification.

Describing the Ooni as a ruler prioritizing the needs of the populace, the Onifegunwa highlighted the significance of personality over position. The Ooni’s realistic approach and awareness of grassroots needs set him apart.

The monarch’s engagement in charitable activities, contributing at least N10 million daily to assist the underprivileged, reflects his commitment to societal well-being. Additionally, the Ooni supports a foundation in Ife, personally financing training for individuals nationwide and ensuring the preservation of cultural customs despite his youth and intelligence.
