Hafsat Abdul Bawa, the Presiding Magistrate of the Anguwan Daji Senior Magistrate Court in Minna, Niger State, has declared her intent to impose a harsh sentence on 58-year-old Ya’u Ibrahim, who is accused of sexually abusing a minor. This move is designed to deter similar crimes within the state.
Ya’u Ibrahim, a resident of Kundu village in Rafi local government area, was charged with two offenses: illicit sexual relations with a child and exploitation. These charges were presented to the court by the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Aliyu Yakubu Kuta, who stated that the actions violated sections 26 (2) and 27 (2) of the Niger Child Right and Protection Law of Niger State 2021, as amended.
The charges are rooted in a report delivered by Abdullahi Dauda, also from Kundu village. Dauda alerted the Kagara Divisional Police Command that Ibrahim had manipulated his six-year-old granddaughter into his room, where he sexually violated her.
During the police investigation, Ibrahim confessed to having sexual intercourse with the young girl in his room. In court, he pleaded guilty to both charges and requested leniency.
However, the presiding Senior Magistrate noted the gravity of the charges and ordered Ibrahim to be held in a correctional facility. She demanded the police investigating officer’s report, the accused’s statement to the police, and his court admission, stating that these would help the court in passing a severe sentence to discourage such acts in the future.
The case will resume on September 11.
