Plateau State: Fulani Herdsmen Invade School, Kill Two Teachers, Injure Others

In a tragic incident at BECO Comprehensive School in Riyom Local Council, Plateau State, two teachers were reportedly killed by assailants believed to be herdsmen. The Vice Principal, along with another individual, were also seriously injured in the attack.

Over the past three months, Riyom, Mangu, and Barakin-Ladi local councils have been subjected to a series of violent acts from gunmen, resulting in loss of life and substantial property damage, including farmland.

The Principal of BECO School, Mr. Dantoro Gyang, confirmed the incident. According to him, the attack took place during a routine staff meeting at around 2.00 p.m. on Monday. He reported that a group of herdsmen had led their cows into the school compound for grazing, prompting intervention from the school’s security personnel.

While the security staff attempted to engage the herdsmen, Gyang narrated that two of the intruders suddenly brandished firearms, shooting and killing two teachers instantly. The school’s Vice Principal (Administration), Mr. Dalyop Ibrahim, and another individual were also shot in the abdomen.

The injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at General Hospital, Riyom, and Jos University Teaching Hospital, respectively.

The attack has been denounced as an act of terrorism by the BEROM Youth Moulders Association (BYM). Solomon Dalyop, the President of BYM, emphasized the need to ban open grazing to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Meanwhile, DSP Alfred Alabo, the spokesperson for Plateau State Police Command, expressed condolences for the victims while promising to provide further details as they become available.
