OGUN STATE – A sad turn of events unfolded on Tuesday as Oba Abraham Bankole, the Olu of Onibuku in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State, was fatally hit by a truck.
The respected monarch was travelling in a popular three-wheeler, commonly referred to as a Keke Napep, when a truck bearing the registration number EPE 252 XF struck him along the bustling Ota-Idiroko expressway, near Winners Chapel. The unfortunate incident led to the immediate loss of Oba Bankole’s life as he was exiting the tricycle.
When reached for a comment, Florence Okpe, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun, confirmed having been alerted about the incident. However, she added that she was awaiting a comprehensive report from the FRSC unit in Ota.
An unnamed high-ranking Oba from Ogun West also confirmed the occurrence and voiced his surprise at why the Olu of Onibuku chose to travel in a tricycle rather than his personal vehicle. Speculations are rife that Oba Bankole may have been compelled to leave his car behind due to a surge in fuel prices or a lack of a suitable personal vehicle.
The late monarch’s body has been moved to the Ota General Hospital, according to sources close to the matter.
