“Most of Afrobeats Song Today Lack Substance” – Burna Boy

Grammy award-winning artist Burna Boy in a recent interview said that 90% of Afrobeats songs today lack substance. The Nigerian musician said most of these songs lack real-life experience, rather it is majorly focused on having a good time.

In his words,

“Ninety percent of them have no real-life experience, which is why you hear most of the Nigerian music, or I will say African music, the Afrobeats as most people call it, is mostly about nothing. Literally nothing. There is no substance to it.” The artiste added, “Like nobody is talking about anything”.

Burna Boy further emphasized that for a song to have substance, it should reflect who artists are and the values they represent.

His statement has however sparked different reactions from social media. While some have faulted him for criticizing a music genre he’s part of, others lauded him for raising a valid point.
