The Akwa Ibom International Worship Centre, with a construction cost exceeding 32 billion naira, has faced criticism on social media, with some users deeming it a “misplaced priority.” The project, initiated by the former governor, Udom Emmanuel, was defended on the grounds of its significance to a state named after God, boasting a predominantly Christian population of 99%.
Emmanuel asserted that the worship center would serve as a perpetual altar, drawing blessings to the people of the state. Despite initial opposition from residents questioning the project’s rationale, the state government, under Emmanuel’s administration, dismissed critics as hypocrites.
Originally slated for completion by the end of 2022, the inauguration of the worship center was subsequently moved to May 28, 2023. Recently, the current governor, Umo Eno, shared news of a “Special Inter-denominational Thanksgiving/New Year Service” held at the worship centre, triggering renewed criticism on social media.
One comment highlighted concerns about economic priorities, pointing to a hunger crisis in the region. The user questioned the economic significance of the worship center in the face of reported food insufficiency, referencing data from the United Nations’ World Food Programme (WFP).
