Akwa Ibom: Aggrieved Youths Demand Justice amid Destruction in Obolo Community

The recent turmoil in the Obolo community of Akwa Ibom State has sparked a demand for justice from local youths. Following an attack on Iwuochang village in Ibeno local government area, the National Executive Council of Obolo Youth Coalition Worldwide (OYC) and other youth organizations convened to condemn the violence and destruction of property.

They specifically called for the arrest and prosecution of those believed to have sponsored the attack. Expressing disappointment in the government’s failure to act despite prior alerts, the youths emphasized their determination to protect their community from further harm.

Governor Umo Eno however intervened in the aftermath of the incident, visiting affected residents and victims in hospital. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Eno urged unity among communities embroiled in the conflict over Stubbs Creek Forest Reserves. He warned against further violence, stating that those responsible would face severe consequences. The governor appealed to political leaders to refrain from exacerbating tensions and emphasized the need for maintaining law and order.

Acknowledging the interconnectedness and shared heritage among the communities involved, Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to resolving the conflict decisively. He called upon local government chairmen to uphold their responsibility in maintaining peace, cautioning that failure to do so would result in swift action, including their removal from office.
