Taraba State: Kutep Tribe “accepts” Rotation of their Ancestral Takum Chieftaincy Stool

  • The Kutep, an ancient indigenous tribe are the ancestral owners of the strangely contested stool
  • It is alleged they are being coerced by shadowy forces

The Kutep Peace Movement (KPM), representing the Kutep ethnic group in Takum local government area of Taraba State, has announced its acceptance of the rotational arrangement for the First Class chieftaincy stool of Takum, as mandated by the State government.

However, their acceptance comes with conditions aimed at ensuring peace and justice in the region. Chief Danladi Rimande, the coordinator of KPM, emphasized the importance of dialogue over violence in resolving the longstanding chieftaincy dispute.

In a press briefing, Rimande highlighted the commitment of the Taraba State Government to install a traditional ruler for the Ukwe Takum stool, which has remained vacant for decades. The KPM stressed the need for inclusivity and sincerity from the government, particularly in addressing the concerns of the Kutep people living in Takum. They called for the protection of Kutep ancestral lands, preservation of cultural heritage, and fair political representation for Kutep individuals.

Furthermore, the KPM urged expedited efforts by the government to facilitate the return of displaced Kutep community members to their lands currently occupied by suspected fulani invaders. They emphasized the importance of peaceful negotiations and dialogue among various ethnic groups vying for the traditional stool, rejecting the prospect of further conflict.

Ultimately, the KPM’s stance reflects a commitment to peaceful resolution, prioritizing dialogue and inclusivity in addressing the complex chieftaincy issue and broader concerns affecting the Kutep community in Taraba State.
