ECOWAS Crisis: Oba of Benin calls for Love, Bortherhood amongst Africans to end Infighting

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II has called for a peaceful resolution and the need for African unity in resolving longstanding conflicts within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

He highlighted the historical bloodline ties among past leaders in Nigeria and neighboring countries such as Chad, Cameroon, and Niger as factors complicating ECOWAS’ conflict resolution efforts. Speaking at his palace in Benin during a courtesy visit by the Edo State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agun Gbenga Joseph, the monarch stressed the importance of finding common ground to address regional challenges.

Reflecting on the porous nature of borders between nations, the traditional ruler expressed concern over the vulnerability exposed by events such as the recent coup d’état in Niger. He highlighted the interconnectedness between Niger and Nigeria, where individuals seamlessly traverse borders for work and residence, underscoring the complexities faced by regional leaders in maintaining stability.

Despite these challenges, the Oba acknowledged recent positive developments, noting the lifting of sanctions following diplomatic efforts by FG, demonstrating the potential for cooperation and conflict resolution within ECOWAS.

Addressing the NSCDC commandant’s visit, Oba Ewuare II expressed support for his endeavors and offered prayers for his success. In response, the commandant outlined measures undertaken by his command to combat crime in Edo State, demonstrating a collaborative approach between traditional leadership and security agencies in addressing societal challenges.
