Niger state-based lawyer, Mohammed Ndarani, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), has urged for a reevaluation of Nigeria’s security framework and governance accountability, proposing the empowerment of traditional rulers as a pivotal solution.
Addressing journalists in Minna on Monday, Ndarani emphasized the indispensable role traditional rulers play in addressing the nation’s security challenges and advocating for constitutional revisions to explicitly acknowledge their significance.
Highlighting the intrinsic connection between traditional rulers and their communities, Ndarani reiterated their unique position as custodians of cultural heritage and moral values. Leveraging their influence and local insights, he emphasized the potential for traditional rulers to contribute significantly to national security efforts. Referencing Article 17 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Ndarani emphasized the need to recognize and collaborate with traditional rulers in fostering peace and stability.
Ndarani’s advocacy for constitutional reforms aims at harnessing the collective wisdom and authority of traditional rulers to address security challenges and enhance governance accountability. He emphasized the necessity of accountability measures for governors, proposing the removal of immunity privileges to ensure legal scrutiny and deterrence against misconduct. This, he believes, will cultivate a culture of transparency, efficiency, and ethical leadership within Nigeria’s political landscape, fostering a safer and more prosperous future for the nation.
