Ondo Court Adjourns alleged Imposter Monarch’s Trial Due to Ill Health

  • The customary process in Irele kingdom involves consulting the oracle to select a king, bypassing the need for government approval, which was observed by the accused

The trial of Prince Ademola Olowoyibiri, accused of impersonating the Olufon of Irele kingdom, faced a setback as the Ondo State High Court in Okitipupa adjourned the hearing due to the prince’s absence, citing ill health. Allegations against Olowoyibiri included illegally assuming the chieftaincy title and parading in royal regalia without government approval, violating state laws. Six chiefs allegedly involved in his ascension were also charged with conspiracy and illegal installation of a monarch.

During the resumed hearing, both the prosecuting and defending counsels urged the court to proceed despite Olowoyibiri’s absence, with the defense presenting his ill health as the reason. However, Justice T.M Adedipe declined, requesting a medical report as proof of the defendant’s condition for the next hearing. He emphasized the need for peace in the domain and adjourned the sitting to February 22nd, 2024.

According to Olowoyibiri’s Personal Assistant, the customary process in Irele kingdom involves consulting the oracle to select a king, bypassing the need for government approval. He defended their actions, stating that petitions against them were based on misunderstandings and that they adhered to their customs without obstruction. Despite this assertion, the legal proceedings continue, highlighting the clash between traditional customs and legal requirements in matters of chieftaincy installation.
