Amawbia, a community in Awka-South Local Government Area in Anambra State is poised to elect a new traditional ruler on December 30th, 2023, following the vacancy in the stool of Okpalaigwe Amawbia since September 2021. The absence of a traditional ruler has hindered the community from accessing various incentives through the traditional institution.
Chief Godwin Araonu, the President-General of Amawbia Town Union, emphasized the importance of filling this leadership vacuum to expedite development. Seven candidates from Ngene village are vying for the position, with the election aligning with the rotational tradition among the six villages in Amawbia.
Chief Araonu acknowledged that none of the candidates met all conditions stipulated in the 2017 Constitution for the enthronement of a traditional ruler. However, adhering to the constitution, the community decided to proceed with the election, allowing the people of Amawbia to determine their next Igwe.
Despite a constitutional anomaly arising from the Osojieze and Okpalaigwe both hailing from Ngene village, the community opted for continuity to ensure a peaceful and harmonious transition, facilitating Amawbia’s active role in contributing to Anambra State’s overall development.
The President-General stressed the urgency of installing a new traditional ruler after a two-year vacancy, underscoring the community’s commitment to maintaining stability and fulfilling its role in advancing Anambra State’s progress across various domains.
