Oba of Benin Advocates Unity and Diversity for National Development During Lagos Visit

In a notable cultural exchange, His Royal Majesty, Omonoba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the revered Oba of Benin, emphasized the pivotal role of diversity and unity in fostering national development during his visit to Lagos. The Oba, expressing admiration for Nigeria’s vast diversity, asserted that the nation’s unity is a testament to its stature as the giant of Africa.

At a meeting with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the Lagos House, Marina, the Oba underscored the importance of Nigerians coming together, transcending differences among various groups. He articulated, “Nigeria is big, but we are still together. We will remain together like this but have to iron out our differences. We should learn to live together like one big family.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, extending gratitude for the rare visit by the Oba of Benin outside his kingdom, acknowledged the significance of the occasion. He praised the Oba for upholding the responsibilities passed down by his forefathers, underscoring the global recognition of the Benin Kingdom.

Governor Sanwo-Olu assured that every effort would be made to ensure tangible dividends of democracy, reducing poverty and fostering hope and socio-economic development.

During the visit, Governor Sanwo-Olu took the Oba on a tour of the John Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History at Onikan. The governor emphasized the preservation of Yoruba culture and heritage for both current and future generations. In response, the Oba commended Sanwo-Olu for his commitment to promoting culture and tradition through the establishment of the center.
