Akwa Ibom: Abducted Business Man Forced to Pay N50 Million Ransom, as “Kidnapping Business Flourish in Nigeria”

In Akwa Ibom, a  businessman named Akpan Essien was abducted from his business premises at Etebi Street, Eket, on October 19. The local police command confirmed his release on Wednesday, with spokesperson Odiko MacDon verifying the news. Essien, who was kidnapped at 7:00 p.m., endured eight days in captivity before regaining his freedom on Friday, October 2

Sources revealed that Essien was released after his family paid a hefty ransom of N50 million to his captors. Following his release, he was found near Parrot Island Creek, located between Oron and Calabar, in the vicinity of the Bakassi Peninsula.

Despite his freedom, Essien’s ordeal took a toll on his health, necessitating medical attention. Consequently, he has been receiving treatment at a private hospital since his return. The incident underscores the ongoing challenges of security in the region, prompting concerns among Akwa Ibom residents and authorities alike.
