Akwa Ibom Dr. Urges Repeal of Controversial Traditional Rulers Law

Dr. Patrick Umoh, the representative of Ikot Ekpene/Essien Udim/Obot Akara Federal Constituency, has strongly criticized the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly for enacting the controversial traditional rulers’ law.

In an open letter addressed to the members of the State Assembly, he vehemently denounced the law as unconstitutional and contrary to principles of natural justice, equity, and good conscience.

According to Dr. Umoh, his primary objection lies with Section 45 of the Traditional Rulers’ Law 2023, which perpetually designates the office of President General of Akwa Ibom State Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers to the Oku Ibom Ibibio. He argued that this provision not only violates the constitutional framework but also contradicts the historical harmony among the diverse ethnic groups constituting Akwa Ibom State.

He emphasized that the law disrupts the longstanding amicable relations between these ethnicities, questioning the assembly members if there was ever a historical precedent where Oku Ibom Ibibio held supreme authority over the Annang and Oron areas of the state.

Dr. Umoh’s critique extends to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, accusing them of betraying their legislative mandate. He contended that the law, instead of promoting peace and good governance, disrupts the social fabric and harmony among the people of Akwa Ibom State.

His strong stance against the legislation underscores the urgency for its repeal, highlighting the need to rectify what he perceives as a grave injustice.
