Benue State: Doctors Demand Rescue of Abducted Colleague, Threaten Work Stoppage

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Benue State has issued a plea for the rescue of kidnapped member, Dr. Asema Msuega. The appeal, made via a joint statement from the NMA’s local leadership, calls upon government officials and influential political figures in the state to aid in securing Dr. Msuega’s release.

Dr. Msuega, a dedicated and selfless medical professional, was kidnapped on July 23 while supervising a malaria program at a Primary Health Centre in the Ukum Local Council area. The statement noted this incident as the second such occurrence within the state in the past three months.

The NMA stressed that Dr. Msuega, the only physician at the Sankera General Hospital, had devoted years of his life to serving the community. The association called upon several prominent figures, including Governor Rev Fr Dr. Hyacinth Alia, Senator Emmanuel Udende, and the Paramount Ruler of the Tiv nation, Prof. James Ayatse, to take swift action to secure the doctor’s release.

Expressing solidarity with the Benue State branch of the Nigerian Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners (NAGGMDP), which has been on strike since Dr. Msuega’s abduction, the NMA warned that they may be forced to cease their vital services if the situation remains unresolved.

The NMA also called for strengthened security measures around health facilities throughout the state, highlighting the non-negotiable right to safety for all health workers.
