Governor Mutfwang Spearheads Agricultural Renewal in Crisis-hit Plateau State

In an effort to address the ongoing crisis in Plateau State, Governor Caleb Mutfwang has initiated the cultivation of 900 hectares of farmland across three Local Government Areas (LGAs) that have been severely impacted by recent violence.

These LGAs, namely Mangu, Barkin Ladi, and Riyom, have been the scene of devastating attacks by gunmen, resulting in the loss of approximately 300 lives and displacing over 30,000 residents.

Yesterday, at the inauguration of this farming intervention at LigitLubang Community, Dr. Susan Bentu, Managing Director of the Agricultural Services and Training Center (ASTC), shared the governor’s plan to extend the initiative to those communities that have been most affected by these violent incidents and subsequent farm destruction.

As Dr. Bentu outlined, the Plateau State Government and ASTC are joining forces to cultivate lands in areas that have borne the brunt of these tragic events, causing many farmers to abandon their land. The intervention will reach four communities in Riyom LGA, one community in Barkin Ladi, and 14 communities in Mangu LGA.

Dr. Bentu emphasized that “the aim of this initiative is to offer critical support to these affected communities, aiding them in the process of rebuilding their lives and restoring hope for a brighter future.”

Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s approval of the cultivation of 900 hectares of land across the three LGAs has been received as a much-needed relief for these communities.

The main goal of this initiative is to allow farmers to salvage the remaining farming season and prevent their farmlands from going to waste. The state government has also addressed the farmers’ appeal for protection by providing security for the cultivated crops, which is expected to encourage displaced residents to return home.
