2023 Presidential Election: Coalition Frown at INEC’s self Review, Demand Independent Body Investigate Questionable “Glitch” Claim

The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP has cautioned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC over a proposed decision to review the outcome of the 2023 election.

The CUPP, therefore, urged INEC to set up an independent commission of inquiry to investigate and examine the unverifiable claims of the commission that there was a glitch in the election.

The Coalition of United Political Parties further stated that due to the loss of confidence and the credibility of INEC, the ideal thing for the commission to do is to set up an independent panel, to look into the issues witnessed in the 2023 presidential election, if they are really serious about maintaining their integrity.

In a statement signed by High Chief Peter Ojonugwa Ameh, the National Secretary of CUPP said,

“It is obvious and noticeable how Mahmood is running up and down in an attempt to try to repair the battered image of the commission and by extension his reputation as well,” the statement said. There is a total loss of public confidence in the commission, so therefore, if the commission goes ahead to conduct a self-examination through a non-transparent process of reviewing the elections.

“If the commission continues with the purported self-review process, then it will amount to nothing in the eyes of the general public. The commission can not review itself without the elements of bias so if Yakubu Mahmood is interested in reviewing the 2023 general election, the right thing to do is to set up an independent commission of inquiry to investigate and examine the unverifiable claims of the commission that there was a glitch”.

Notably, Labour Party and its presidential aspirant Peter Obi in a petition, are challenging the outcome of the presidential election where Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress was declared the elected president by INEC.

During the proceedings, the petitioners had previously stated that the electoral commission had denied them access to some sensitive documents which are germane to their pleadings.
