The Super Eagles secured their qualification to the 2024 AFCON with a last-minute goal from Kelechi Iheanacho against Sierra Leone. Needing just one point to progress, the Jose Peseiro-led team had a tough time as Sierra Leone fought hard to deny them the win. Despite two first-half goals from Victor Osimhen, Sierra Leone equalized through Mustapha Bundu and Augustus Kargbo. However, Iheanacho’s goal in the 94th minute secured the win and sent Nigeria to their 20th Africa Cup of Nations Cup competition. The victory also saw Nigeria finish top of Group A with 12 points.
Even before the Leone Stars launched their comeback, the Super Eagles had missed several opportunities to secure their victory. Samuel Chukwueze missed two great chances in the first half, and Moses Simon failed to capitalize on the chance created by Osimhen.
In the absence of Francis Uzoho, Coach Peseiro opted for Israel-based Adebayo Adeleye as the replacement goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Semi Ajayi was preferred to William Troost-Ekong in the starting lineup.
