In Agosasa community, Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, tensions escalated on Sunday as a clash erupted between youths and the monarch, Azeez Akinpelu, over traditional procession rites, resulting in unspecified injuries and 18 arrests. This incident, which lasted for several days, reportedly caused residents to flee for safety amidst fears of being caught in the crossfire.
The roots of the conflict trace back to a longstanding dispute over the succession to the kingship stool, following the death of the former Oja of Agosasa, Oba James Elegbede, in February 2022. Previous clashes, including one in September 2022 resulting in fatalities, underscored the deep-seated tensions surrounding the selection of the next monarch.
The recent clash was purportedly ignited when traditional worshippers, performing rites, were confronted by the new monarch demanding prior briefing before such rituals could proceed. This demand reportedly incited opposition from traditionalists, leading to a confrontation between supporters of the monarch and those loyal to the traditionalists, culminating in violence.
Law enforcement intervened to quell the unrest, with the police arresting numerous individuals allegedly involved in the brawl. Senior police sources confirmed the arrests and detailed subsequent actions to restore order, including the deployment of additional security personnel to the community. As investigations unfold, efforts are underway to mitigate further escalation and restore peace to Agosasa community.
