In Rivers State, three police officers are set to undergo an orderly room trial following their involvement in the extortion of $3,000 from two travellers in Abia State, as revealed by the state’s police spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko. The officers in question, identified as Assistant Superintendents Doubara Edonyabo and Talent Mungo, along with Inspector Odey Michael, faced internal disciplinary measures for their reported criminal activities.

3 Rivers State officers accused of extorting a victim of $3,000

The accusations surfaced when human rights activist Harrison Gwamnishu posted on X, claiming that the officers arrested a man, extorted $3,000 from him, and subsequently released him in Port Harcourt. Iringe-Koko confirmed the arrest of the officers and ongoing investigations in response to Gwamnishu’s post. The police spokesperson assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made public.

In an official statement on Monday, Iringe-Koko disclosed that the $3,000, equivalent to N4.2 million, had been recovered from the officers and returned to the victims on January 18. The victims had been apprehended in Abia State and transported to Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states on allegations of fraud without details on the complainant, their offense, or reasons for being taken to multiple states.

Concluding the statement, Iringe-Koko outlined the disciplinary actions taken against the officers, stating that the assistant superintendents received official queries, while the inspector was slated for an orderly room trial. The public parading of the errant officers was emphasized as a measure to uphold transparency, professionalism, and accountability, affirming that their actions did not align with the values and principles of the police.
