Akwa Ibom wins “Cleanest State in Nigeria”, for the Sixth Consecutive Year

Akwa Ibom State has once again secured its position as Nigeria’s cleanest state, claiming the top spot for the sixth consecutive time with an impressive cumulative score of 72 percent. The announcement came during the unveiling of the results in Uyo, the state capital, as part of the ‘STONE Pro-Max 2023’ project review circus, spanning five years.

The National Coordinator/Secretary of the National Technical Study Group (NTSG) on Clean Up Nigeria, Prince Ene Baba Owoh, Jr., conveyed congratulations to the government and people of Akwa Ibom for their consistent commitment to cleanliness.

Acknowledging Akwa Ibom’s achievement, Owoh revealed that the state would be honored with the prestigious STONE 2023 Pro-Max Green Crystal Award for emerging as the overall best performing state in the six-year performance indicators and clinching the title of the cleanest state in Nigeria five times during the project review period (2018-2023).

The Chairman of Akwa Ibom State Environmental Protection and Waste Management Agency (AKSPEWMA), Obong Prince Ikim, was invited to receive the Cleanest State in Nigeria Pro-Max Green Crystal Awards certification for the state’s outstanding performance in all five performance indicators.

The Commissioner emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to maintaining a safe and secure environment, pledging to enhance waste management, eliminate gas flaring, and address practices threatening the serenity of the environment.

Reflecting on the achievements, Prince Akpan Ikim, Chairman of AKSPEWMA, acknowledged the visionary efforts of past governors in establishing and supporting the agency. He highlighted Governor Umo Eno’s dedication to environmental sustainability and the pursuit of recycling waste to create wealth.

Ikim expressed gratitude for the recognition from Clean Up Nigeria Initiative and affirmed the state’s determination to remain a model of cleanliness in Nigeria through legislative measures and collaboration with stakeholders.
