In a collaborative effort to combat human trafficking, Benin Monarch, Oba Ewuare II and the Ambassador of Belgium to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, emphasized the need for coordinated actions and sustained advocacy. During a courtesy visit to the Oba’s palace in Benin City, Edo State, Ambassador Leenknegt, accompanied by Kelvin Uwaibi from the Edo State Investment Promotion office and Mosis Obakpolor from the State Civil Service, expressed concern over the exploitation faced by Nigerian migrants.
Oba Ewuare II acknowledged the complexity of eradicating human trafficking, underscoring its close connection to illegal migration. He highlighted the global threat posed by these issues, emphasizing the shared responsibility in addressing them. The monarch also recounted the proactive measures taken by the palace when Benin City was mistakenly labeled a hub for human trafficking in the past.
Ambassador Leenknegt praised Oba Ewuare II for championing the fight against human trafficking and irregular migration. He disclosed the Belgian government’s intention to collaborate with Nigeria, relevant institutions, and stakeholders to raise awareness about the risks associated with human trafficking. Leenknegt acknowledged the personal commitment of Oba Ewuare II to this cause, recognizing its significance.
