In a proposal aimed at curbing substance abuse, the Shehu of Borno, Mr. Abubakar Elkanemi, has advocated for mandatory drug tests for couples intending to wed. The monarch, a prominent figure in the state, believes that implementing such tests as a prerequisite for marriage will act as a deterrent, discouraging young individuals from engaging in substance abuse.
This call was made during a three-day working visit by the chief executive of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Buba Marwa, to the state. The Shehu of Borno assured Mr. Marwa that all 59 district heads under his emirate, along with the Chief Imam of Borno, Mr. Zanna Laisu Ibrahim Ahmad, would actively support and implement this idea. This involves the establishment of drug control committees in their respective communities.
Governor Babagana Zulum, present at the meeting, expressed the state government’s commitment to supporting the NDLEA’s vision for a drug-free society. Governor Zulum commended Mr. Marwa for his leadership qualities and pledged to enhance collaboration between the government and the NDLEA for the betterment of law, order, and the well-being of the people.
The NDLEA chief, Mr. Marwa, emphasized the importance of clearing all 27 local government areas of the state from drugs. He lauded Governor Zulum’s achievements in office and stressed the necessity of reducing the demand for illicit drugs while simultaneously limiting their access and availability.
Mr. Marwa clarified that his visit to Borno State was part of a broader advocacy and mobilization effort against drug abuse, urging stakeholders to actively engage in the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking.
