The Akwa Ibom State government has expressed its discontent regarding the unauthorized reopening of the Chinese firm, Golden Tripod Company. The closure of this company was initially enforced by Governor Umo Eno due to concerns about its operations posing potential threats to human health and the environment.
This matter was a focal point during an extended session of the State Executive Council held at the Government House in Uyo, the state capital.
According to a statement released by the Commissioner for Information, Comrade Ini Ememobong, on Thursday, Governor Umo Eno has mandated the permanent closure of Golden Tripod Company. The resolution includes the allocation of an alternative piece of land for the company at the industrial estate in Itam.
The State Executive Council, in its decision, expressed disapproval of the company’s illegal reopening and underscored the alleged hazardous nature of its operations.
In addition to addressing the concerns related to the Chinese firm, the meeting featured the presentation of the estimated budget for the year 2024. Commissioner for Finance, Linus Nkan, presented a comprehensive budget with a total recurrent expenditure of N352,737,281,810. The capital expenditure was reported at N487,895,128,180, culminating in a total budgetary allocation of N840,632,409,990.
Furthermore, the State Executive Council issued directives to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs. The emphasis was on ensuring the rigorous enforcement of existing laws from the State House of Assembly.
These laws mandate all principal officers of local government areas to reside within their respective jurisdictions. The government’s commitment to regulatory measures and budgetary considerations reflects its dedication to the well-being of the state and its residents.
