ISESE: Oyo State Approves African Traditional Religion Holiday

  • The newly approved traditional religion holiday will be observed annually on August 20

The Oyo State House of Assembly has authorized a special holiday for practitioners of traditional religion, also known as Isese. The decision was championed by the Majority Leader, Hon. Sanjo Onaolapo, highlighting the significance of recognizing a day for traditional religion followers, similar to Christians and Muslims.

Onaolapo pointed out that other states in the Southwest region have already implemented such a holiday, underlining the importance of respecting the faith of traditional religious devotees.

In response to the bill’s approval, Governor Seyi Makinde expressed readiness to sign it into law. This comes after the Ogun State House of Assembly sanctioned a similar holiday for Isese followers, a move previously refused by former members.

The newly approved holiday will be observed annually on August 20, allowing traditional religion followers to celebrate their faith.
