A video that has now gone viral shows the legitimacy embattled Nigerian President Bola Tinubu promising a reduction in fuel prices during his 2023 presidential campaign. The video resurfaced as the nation experienced a significant fuel price hike.
In the footage, recorded during a campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, on January 25, 2023, Tinubu can be heard addressing the crowd in Yoruba, promising improved living conditions under his administration.
It was reported on Tuesday that fuel prices had escalated to N617 per liter, a substantial increase from the previous price of N197. This change came two months after President Tinubu decided to eliminate the fuel subsidy upon his inauguration on May 29, 2023.
Following Tinubu’s decision to end the fuel subsidy, the cost of fuel rose to N537 per liter in just two days. Tinubu during the campaign rally in Abeokuta, assured the crowd that contrary to expectations of petrol prices hitting N200, he planned to review and reduce the prices upon his election as the nation’s leader.
Addressing the crowd, Tinubu said, “This election is a revolution. They are plotting, but they will fail. They said fuel prices will increase and reach N200/N500 per liter. Go and relax, we will crash the prices.”
His supporters responded to his question, “Will you allow them?”, with a unanimous “No.”
Despite any potential fuel crisis, Tinubu urged his supporters to remain calm, assuring them that he would address the issue of fuel supply permanently. He expressed confidence that his administration would prevail over any obstacles and emerge victorious.
This report comes amidst growing concerns over the President’s ability to fulfill his campaign promises, given the recent surge in fuel prices.
