WIC: Global Igbo Summit Slated for Atlanta USA to Address Regional Challenges

ATLANTA – In response to the escalating challenges in Nigeria’s southeastern region, the World Igbo Congress (WIC) has announced plans for a convention, scheduled to take place from August 31 to September 4, 2023. The gathering aims to reassess the Igbo agenda, taking into account recent developments.

The southeast region has been plagued by deteriorating security and economic conditions over the past two years, largely triggered by the re-apprehension and subsequent detention of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Despite these challenges, the WIC is eager to stimulate economic growth in the southeast and address the existential threats that the region currently faces.

WIC’s Chairman of the Board, Prof Anthony Ejiofor, and Public Relations Officer, Hon Basil Onwukwe, released a statement highlighting that the convention will serve as a global gathering for the Igbo community. Both individuals residing in their homeland and those in the diaspora will unite in Atlanta, USA, to discuss and formulate solutions to pressing local issues.

This year’s convention will be hosted by the Igbo Progressive Union of Atlanta, a city lauded by Ejiofor as the southeastern USA’s gem and one of America’s most vibrant cities. Atlanta is renowned as the hometown of Martin Luther King and the location of the Jimmy Carter Presidential Center. It also serves as the business hub for CNN and Delta Air Lines, which operates the world’s busiest airport.

Onwukwe expressed the WIC’s readiness to leverage the right business networks to tackle the existential and security threats facing the Igbo homeland and its people. He emphasized, “We are determined to take up the mantle of shaping the future of the Igbo nation. The WIC Convention is a platform to recalibrate the Igbo Agenda based on the current state of affairs in Nigeria.”

He added that if justice does not become a universal language in Nigeria and truth remains unchallenged, the Igbo community will have no choice but to seek an exit from a system that doesn’t ensure the safety and prosperity of their generation.
