13 Suspected Killers of Kwara Monarch Detained

An Ilorin Magistrate’s Court has ordered the remand of 13 individuals suspected of being involved in the killing of the Olukoro of Koro in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Segun Aremu-Cole. The late monarch, a retired Army General, was tragically slain in his palace shortly after returning from a security meeting with fellow traditional rulers in Isin Local Government Area.

Following intensive efforts involving the police, military, DSS, and local hunters, the suspects were apprehended five days later in a dense forest bordering Ekiti and Kogi states.

The individuals facing charges have been identified as Godwin Jacob, Olowofela Oyebanji, Adefalolu Ayodele, Tewasie Francis, Babatunde Samuel, Godwin Joseph, Issa Number, Miracle Solomon, Abraham Kehinde, Muhammed Bello, Muhammed Muhammed, Ahmadu Umaru, and Muhammed Dankai. They stand accused of various offenses including criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, kidnapping, and providing false information.

According to the Police First Information Report (FIR), the case was initially reported by one Aremu Simon Adeyemi to the Eruku Police Division. Adeyemi recounted how the suspects, upon being challenged, brandished a gun at him, compelling him to follow them.

His grandson managed to escape through a rear exit, but tragically, the suspects proceeded to carry out the heinous act, resulting in the monarch’s death and the abduction of his wife and another individual named Mercy.

During the court proceedings, the police prosecutor, Abdullah Sanni, presented a motion ex-parte along with the police report, urging the court to remand the suspects. Magistrate Monisola Kamson, presiding over the case, granted the request, ordering the suspects to be remanded in prison custody. The matter has been adjourned to March 5, 2024.
