A High Court in Port Harcout Rivers state has ordered the Nigerian Police to pay HRH Kevin Anugwo, a traditional ruler in Ahoada East Council, of Rivers State, N3 million as compensation for wrongful arrest and detention
The monarch who was detained since last year September, was forced to spend 82 days in prison over the death of the late Divisional Police Officer, SP Bako Amgbashim.
In a suit marked PHCR044/FHR23, the claimant, HRH Anugwo sued the Octopus Strike Force, Rivers State Commissioner of Police, the Inspector General of Police and Rivers State Criminal Investigation Department
Delivering judgement, Justice A.M Oriye ruled that the arrest and further detention of the monarch was illegal and violated his human rights
Justice Oriye further ruled that the police must tender a public apology in a national newspaper and also desist from further harassing the monarch
