Delta Igbos Cancel Annual Festivities to Honour Departed Monarchs, Asagba and Omu Dunkwu

Anioma nation, a socio-cultural group in Delta State, has made the decision to forego its annual Anioma Cultural Festival for the year 2024 as a mark of respect for two departed monarchs – the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Prof. Chike Edozien, and Omu Anioma, Omu Martha Dunkwu. Both monarchs had been staunch supporters of the Organization for the Advancement of Anioma Culture (OFAAC), the entity behind the cultural festival. The event, traditionally held every Easter Monday with the presence of the monarchs, has been canceled for this year.

President of OFAAC, Mr. Kester Ifeadi, announced the cancellation in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, emphasizing the desire to honor and pay tribute to the late monarchs who had played significant roles in advancing Anioma culture. He highlighted their pivotal contributions to uniting the nine local government areas of Delta North, underscoring their commitment to the objectives of OFAAC.

Ifeadi further elaborated on the sensitivity of the timing, acknowledging that the community is still mourning the loss of these esteemed leaders. He emphasized the need for respect and sensitivity during this period of mourning, stating that it would be inappropriate to proceed with the cultural festival festivities.

Reflecting on the profound influence of the late monarchs, Obi Henry Kikachukwu, the Obi of Ubulu-Unor, spoke of their integral roles in fostering peace and preserving Anioma cultural heritage. He noted their unwavering dedication to promoting the rich cultural heritage of Anioma, highlighting their contributions to the success and unity of the region.

The decision to cancel the 2024 Anioma Cultural Festival serves as a solemn tribute to the legacy and contributions of the late Asagba of Asaba and Omu of Anioma, honoring their memory and acknowledging their significant impact on Anioma culture and unity.
